SCIRIA visit UCF

April 3, 2009

5 members of the SCIRIA (Computer Interface Research & Innovation in the Arts) team, from Camberwell College of Arts, visited Falmouth this week to present their current research projects and discuss potential areas for collaboration.  Alongside some interesting and wide ranging discussions we also managed to create two drawings based on the work of Barbara Rauch.

See the ‘Autonomatic visit SCIRIA, February 24, 2009’ post for more details on SCIRIA.

CNC Drawing

April 3, 2009

Justin has been undertaking some tests into the different marks that are achievable when using a CNC router as a drawing machine. Using a variety media and adaptations to existing tool holders, he has started to build up a vocabulary of marks and effects. CNC drawings produced by other cluster members can be seen in earlier posts.

We are intend pursuing this area of research and are excited by the possibilities of marrying a level of image complexity, associated with the capabilities of digital technologies, with the robust simplicity of common mark making tools (e.g. pencils, marker pens, scribes etc.)

Tavs Jorgensen’s solo show at the Will’s Lane Gallery in St Ives has just opened this Sunday (the 29th of March).
The show is titled: “From Virtual Line to Physical Form” and features work originating from a series of research projects investigating new ways of using digital tools undertaken at the Autonomatic Research Unit. The aim is to establish methods of creating that utilises these new tools but also re values the notion of craftsmanship and the dexterity of the human hand.
The show includes glass, ceramics and CNC generated drawings and will be running until April the 25th.

Autonomatic helped to facilitate a hugely inspirational talk at the Tremough Design Centre by the Indonesian designer Singgih S Kartono. Singgih’s wooden radio won the Brit Insurance Design awards 2009 presented at the Design Museum last month.
While being a very beautiful product, probably the most interesting aspect of the radio is the how Singgih has created a design with a much more holistic approach, aiming to facilitate social empowerment and establish a sustainable local industry which utilises renewable resources.
